The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided to boycott the Akatsi and Buem by- elections slated for February 5 and 26 respectively. A statement issued Sunday afternoon also said until further notice, the NPP will not participate in future elections conducted by the Electoral Commission. The party’s General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is quoted as saying the decision, agreed upon by the National Executive Committee (NEC) at a leadership meeting last week, concerns the nature of the petition challenging the 2012 presidential elections. The petition outlines evidence that at least, one in eight votes declared by the Electoral Commission in the December Elections was invalid. Mr Owusu Afriyie told Joy News the NPP will be defeating their position on the outcome of the polls if they take part in these by-election. The Akatsi South seat became vacant following the election of Edward Doe Adjaho, as Speaker of Parliament while that of Buem followed the death of Henry Ford Kamel, who was also the Volta regional Minister.
