The Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman constituency, Kofi Osei Ameyaw has taken a swipe at President Mahama for what he described as creating a "needless Ministry" for social protection.According to the MP, no Ghanaian has his or her life in danger to warrant the creation of a whole Ministry for social protection.President Mahama has come under barrage of criticisms for replacing the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs with Gender, Children and Social Protection. The President was compelled to issue a statement to explain, the work of the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection is to protect and promote the well-being of the vulnerable in society. He stressed that the Ministry would coordinate, monitor and evaluate the various programmes of the children and gender departments to ensure compliance. But Many have interpreted the sector Minister's position on homosexuality to suggest she is likely to use her office to promote the act.The Minister, Nana Oye-Lithur however, stated at her vetting that she would not promote homosexuality but protect the rights of all Ghanaians including gays.Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Tuesday, Kofi Osei-Ameyaw maintained his belief that the newly created Ministry is to among others, promote homosexuality unlike the previous Ministry which did not give protection to homosexuals. He asserted that the President may have succumbed to pressure from gay lobbyists, to create the new Ministry. The former deputy Minister for Trade and Industry in the erstwhile Kufuor government opined that the acceptance of homosexuality in Ghana is an affront to the moral fibre of the people. He asserted that a survey conducted shows that over 70% of Ghanaians do not want the practice of homosexuality in Ghana and urged the president to resist any attempt by gay lobbyists to have the practice accepted in Ghana.
