National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate Bernard Ahiafor has been declared the winner of the Akatsi South by-election.
He drew 12,079 votes to beat the other two candidates, the independent Evans Gadeto, who finished with 8,312 votes, and the PPP’s Anthony Tsikata, who received 369 votes.
Reports say that hundreds of NDC supporters who thronged the collation center at the Akatsi Training College are jubilating in the streets while some supporters of Mr Gadeto have expressed dissatisfaction at the poll’s outcome.
The opposition New Patriotic Party boycotted the by-election, protesting that the Electoral Commission cannot be trusted to conduct fair elections.
Voter turnout was relatively low at 49.02%.
