President John Dramani Mahama will this morning deliver his maiden State of the Nation Address to a full house in Parliament after the Minority rescinded its decision to boycott the proceedings.
The Minority, who had earlier reserved the right not to attend the event, appear to have softened their stance and may avail themselves to the occasion as their Parliamentary leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, told the media “we will see the members in the House” following a closed-door caucus meeting on the matter.
The address will be delivered in line with Article 67 of the Constitution, which mandates that the President deliver a message on state of the nation at the beginning of each session of Parliament.
The Minority boycotted President Mahama’s swearing-in and investiture on January 7, 2013 and declined to participate in the vetting of ministerial nominees, arguing that their nominations could be annulled if the Supreme Court’s rules in their favour on the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) petition challenging the 2012 presidential election results.
NPP presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, his running mate Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and national party Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey have contested the outcome of the 2012 presidential elections at the Supreme Court.
Usually reliable sources told the GNA that even though NPP leadership wanted the Minority caucus to boycott any event relating directly to the presidency, the Minority will attend the president’s address to observe the goings-on.
