Parents and guardians have been advised not to give out their children to be sent to Yeji for fishing expedition because there are many implications in that business than the benefits they derived.
The Winneba District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Jordan Quaye said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Winneba on Friday.
He said, apart from these children doing tedious and hazardous jobs to the detriment of their health, they also did not attend school, making life very difficult and unbearable for them when they became adults.
The Police Commander asked parents of such children to use financial assistance and other interventions provided by the government judiciously to improve their financial standard to enable them cater for their children.
ASP Quaye expressed concern that some parents in the Central Region, "especially Winneba and Senya Beraku give out their children to be sent to Yeji under slave conditions".
"Families are warned to desist from either mortgaging their children for money or any form of servitude because it is an offence and those involved could be arrested and prosecuted".
The Police Commander said children, as future leaders must be given the necessary education that would make them to become useful leaders.
The youth would not be able to cater for his old parents in future when he himself was not in gainful employment, he said.
Mr. Quaye warned fishermen from Yeji who have been visiting some communities along the cost for the children to stop the practice because anyone caught would be made to face the law.
