The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea claims the incessant strikes in the country is as a result of government’s gross mismanagement of the public purse.He stated that instead of government addressing the salary discrepancies of public sector workers, it squandered the tax payers money on its 2012 electioneering campaign.Nana Akomea's comments come on the back of the ongoing strike action by the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).Even though government is making frantic efforts to settle the matter, both groups have instructed their members to stay off the classroom until their concerns are addressed.Expressing his sympathy to the students affected on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Nana Akomea said the striking teachers are not to blame.According to him, strike is the only language the Mahama-led administration understands to ensure the right thing is done.The NPP man cited how government acted swiftly when missionary hospitals across the country decided not to attend to National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card holders due to unpaid claims.Nana Akomea was skeptical about government's ability to pay the striking teachers their outstanding allowances since according to him, all the money has been used for the gargantuan ede bee k3k3 campaign.The NPP’s Director of Communication scoffed at government’s claim to deliver a Better Ghana “when in fact Ghana has returned into the stone ages”.“We live in a country where water, electricity and gas have become the most expensive commodity under a government which professed to make life better for Ghanaians” he said.Nana Akomea added that even when Ghana’s deficit was at 6.6% in 2008, NDC then in opposition said the erstwhile Kufuor government engaged in profligate spending and “now that our deficit is at 12.1 % how do we called them”.On the contrary, Ade Coker, Greater Accra Chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC) who was also on the programme described Akomea’s comments as fallacious.He said government has accumulated huge deficit because it continued all the projects left by the NPP when it came to power.Ade Coker said the NDC as a social democratic party is doing everything possible to reduce the hardship brought on Ghanaians due to NPP’s mismanagement of the economy.The NDC man observed that the strike action by the teachers is most unfortunate and assured students of government’s efforts to address the issue in the shortest possible time.Ade Coker also appealed to the teachers to return to the classroom as their leaders negotiate with government.
