Parliament’s Food and Agriculture and Cocoa Affiars Committee will soon summon the Chief Executive of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority, Alhaji Gilbert Seidu Iddi, to answer questions on how the afforestation project is being handled.
The project came under public scrutiny when it was revealed in a report from the House’s finance committee that about 33 million Ghana cedis has been spent on planting trees in the Northern part of the country.MP for Kwadaso, Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto says the committee was never aware of the afforestation project and has questioned when the trees were planted.Speaking on Multi TV’s AM Show, Dr. Afriyie Akoto says the committee in the coming days will summon Alhaji Iddi to answers questions regarding the management of the afforestation and other projects.Dr. Afriyie-Akoto also bemoaned parliament’s failure to play its oversight role of scrutinizing expenditure and profligate spending by the executive and says a reform in the laws that govern the legislature will be the solution.Interestingly, Parliamentary Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs had “no hint about this GHS15 million going to SADA for this guinea fowl project” Dr. Afriye-Akoto added. He described as “ridiculous” SADA’s explanation that tress planted as part of the afforestation project have been destroyed by bush fires. In his view, there was no way the trees, which was planted last year, could grow to levels capable of being consumed by fire within a year. “SADA and all these parastatals should be brought under proper control” he advised.
