Superintendent Slim Opoku Manford, Tarkwa District Police Commander, has suggested that scrap metal dealers should be made to register with the district assemblies and the Police, to control the rampant theft of electric and telephone cables in the country.
Supt. Manford gave the advice when officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Telecom visited him at his office, at Tarkwa, to find solution to theft of electric and telephone cables that had hit the area and parts of the country.
He said scrap metal dealers should be made to keep records indicating the description and prices of scrap metals purchased or otherwise acquired.
Supt. Manford said to discourage criminals from stealing the cables, scrap metal dealers ought also to be requested to operate only between 0900 hours and 1800 hours, and to keep metals scraps bought for forty-eight hours before melting or transforming them.
He also proposed that the police should be mandated to inspect and clear scrap metals before they are transported from one location to the other.
Supt. Manford stressed that these measures would help the police in arresting criminals engaging in telephone and electric cable theft.
He advised the public to report anyone found with electric or telephone cables or any metal suspected to have been stolen to the police.
