Reports reaching Joy News concerning the ongoing Kumbungu constituency by-election indicate there is low voter turnout, but the election is generally peaceful.
Voters in the Northern Region’s Kumbungu constituency are casting their ballots Tuesday April 30, to elect a member of parliament amid tight security.
The Kumbungu seat became vacant after incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mohammed Mumuni, left to take up the post of Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP). The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is boycotting the polls.
Joy News’ Northern regional correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed, who visited 15 polling stations in the constituency reported that in some parts of the constituency, the exercise started on a good note with bio-metric verification going smoothly, however the situation is different in the remote parts of the constituency.
He said there have been widespread rejection of bio-metric verification in some polling stations.
Voters are also complaining about the distance they have to travel before getting to their polling stations, the reporter said.
Hashmin also reported that a combined team of heavily armed Police and the Military is patrolling the area, but there have not been any incidence of violence so far.
