The Ghana National Fire Service has begun investigations into the Sunday morning fire that razed down dozens of shops at the Kumasi Central market. The fire started around 2: 30am Sunday and destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis. Luv FM’s Erastus Asare-Donkor earlier reported that firemen have cordoned off the fire scene in an attempt to stop it from spreading further. Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Philip Arhin Mensah told Joy News though they have been able to control the blaze, there were pockets of it which they are still trying to put it out. It is not yet known what caused the fire but traders suspect it might have been triggered by a power failure. The Deputy Chief Fire Officer who described the extent of damage as quite widespread, stressed it was too early to determine its cause. He said investigations have begun. Earlier, Myjoyonline.com’s Ernest Dela Aglanu who was also at the scene, reported seeing thick smoke billowing from the part of the market where second-hand clothes and cooking utensils were sold. No casualty has been recorded so far and one sustained injuries. Erastus said some traders who attempted to enter the scene to salvage what they could were stopped by the police; women wailed uncontrollably, Dela added. Regional Commander DCOP Augustine Gyening said his men did not just prevent looters from getting to the fire scene but also comforted the victims. The Deputy Regional Minister Samuel Yaw Adusei noted there is soon going to be a reconstruction of the market which will take into account all recommendations given by stakeholders.
