Fishermen and fishmongers at Dixcove, a fishing community in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, say their livelihoods are threatened by false reports that they use formalin to preserve fishes. Formalin is a chemical used for embalming corpses. The fisherfolks claim buyers are rejecting their fishes at the market, and even at the shores following the report which they describe as false. The fisherfolks who demonstrated at Dixcove, told Joy News they were disappointed in the Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Mr Aquinas Tawaih Quansah, who is alleged to have first made comments about formalin use openly at Shama without any serious investigations. Radio Maxx’s Ebenezer Afanyi Dadzie reports that the fisherfolks are also displeased with some media houses whom they accuse of making a meal out of the false alarm. Secretary to the Fisheries Co-management Forum at Dixcove, and Assembly Member for Upper Dixcove, Issac Simon Bassel, said the rumour has taken a heavy toll on business of the fishermen and fishmongers. He called on the Fisheries Commission to speak on the matter to restore public confidence in their products. The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has said its initial investigations show no evidence of formalin being used for fish preservation by the fisherfolks.
