Lawyers involved in the ongoing Presidential Election Petition have unanimously condemned utterances that amount to a usurpation of the powers of the Supreme Court.In a rare case of unanimity outside the Court room, the lawyers, shortly after the court went on recess, Tuesday, took turns to condemn what they say are contemptuous comments made by political activists, journalists and lawyers on the ongoing Presidential Election Petition hearing.Three persons - Ken Kuranchie of the Daily Searchlight, Stephen Atubiga and Kweku Boahen both of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been hauled before the court by the nine panel of judges hearing the case for purported prejudicial comments on the case.Shortly before the court went on recess, President of the Panel, William Atuguba alerted the court about the presence of the “three special guests.”He said when the court returns from the break it will deal with the issue for which they have been invited.But even before the court returns from its short break, all the lawyers at a joint press conference said they will not support conducts and comments that challenge the powers of the Supreme Court.Counsel for the Third Respondent, Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata who led the chorus of condemnation, said merely because one is a member of the NDC does not give him/her the right to make contemptuous comments against the judges and the Supreme Court.Philip Addison supported fully the views expressed by his colleague, adding that supporters of the NPP must equally take note.Tony Lithur who represents the President said his colleagues have lucidly expressed the views shared by all.Quarshie Idun of the EC, on his part said they will not support comments that bring the administration of justice into disrepute.It is not clear what disciplinary action the judges have resolved to take against the three.But having already dealt leniently with Sammy Awuku for making similar comments, the fate of the three persons may be ominous.
