Managing Editor for the Daily Searchlight newspaper, Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie will begin serving his 10-day jail term at the Nsawam Prisons, Joy News sources at the Criminal Investigations Department have confirmed.
Mr. Kurachie as well as a member of National Democratic Congress’ communication team Stephen Atubiga, were originally being prepared to begin serving their jail term at the CID Headquarters in Accra until that arrangement changed shortly after the ruling was given.
The defiant senior journalist was found guilty of criminal contempt by the Supreme Court and jailed 10 days, while the NDC communicator is to serve three days for the same offence, having showed remorse.
Delivering the judgment, the President of the nine-member panel, hearing the Presidential Election Petition, Justice William A. Atuguba said Mr. Kuranchie did not show any remorse over comments considered offensive by the court.
Meanwhile, counsel for Mr. Kuranchie, Atta Akyea has described the ruling as unfair, saying “justice has not been done”. Mr. Atta Akyea ruled out any plans to apply for review because; “by the time the review would be heard, the gentleman would have finished serving the sentence”.
He however said if given another opportunity, he would approach the case the same way.
The Abuakwa South Member of Parliament said he was “ignorant” of the procedure adopted by the court and therefore “can’t fight beyond this point”.
