President John Mahama says, Ghana has made significant progress in the various sectors of the economy particularly in the areas of education, health, agriculture and infrastructural development.
He said the country has increased supply of potable drinking water from about 40 per cent to almost 70 per cent, adding that enrolment of school children into schools has also increased to about 90 per cent in recent times.
President Mahama was addressing the chiefs and people of Agave Afedume last Saturday in the South Tongu District of the Volta region where he commissioned water project that will serve thirteen communities in the area.
According to the president, the utmost responsibility of any government is to provide the needed infrastructure among other social interventions that will transform the lives of the people and those are exactly what his government is doing.
President Mahama urged residence of the region to have confidence in the government, stating that they are witnesses to the government development efforts in the region.
He assured the people that various roads will be constructed especially in farming communities to facilitate transportation in such areas, adding, that the Eastern Corridor Project when completed will link the South and the Northern part of the country which will eventually enhance business activities.
The President also mentioned that Ghana has performed creditably well in the energy sector, noting that apart from South Africa, Ghana is the country with the highest electricity connectivity in Africa.
He also disclosed that the government has ordered meters which will soon be distributed to districts that have been connected to the national grid.
“If somebody says this country is going back it is absolutely not true,” he charged.
He said Ghana is achieving almost all the Millennium Development Goals( MDG) it ascribed to, indicating that the country has reduced extreme hunger from above 37 per cent to below 5 per cent.
The Volta Regional minister Nii Afotey Agbo charged the citizenry to ignore what he described as negative publications in the media which is aimed at undermining development efforts.
He stressed the need for the people to be more focus and proactive in tackling their development needs.
The Member of Parliament of the area Komla Mensah Woyome and the Queen mother of Agave Afedume, Mama Dunenyo Afadu mentioned the bad road network as the major problem confronting the people and appealed to the president to help construct the road to attract investors to take advantage of the enormous economic potential of the area.
