Witness for the Electoral Commission Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan says photocopies of a pink sheet done by the Petitioners may explain a difference in the results in the Electoral Commissioner’s copy and that submitted by the petitioners.
He gave this explanation on Day 46 of an election petition hearing seeking to overturn the EC’s declaration of John Mahama as winner of the 2102 general elections.
The NPP presidential candidate in the last elections, Nana Akufo-Addo, his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP National Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey brought the petition before the Supreme Court.
Counsel for the Petitioners Phillip Addison was cross-examining the witness for the EC, the Second Respondent in the Petition, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.
On a particular pink sheet, he asked the witness to read out the question on C5. The witness read it as "what is the total number of unused ballots?” Addison requested the witness to read out the figure.
The E.C boss observed that it looked like 366 on the photocopied pink sheet provided by the Petitioners but on EC11A which is the E.C’s original copy, it looks like 369.
Addison suggested to him that there is a figure ‘7’ on EC11A but Afari-Gyan insisted on what he saw, using his proverbial phrase “as far as the eye can see”.
Addison pressed further and wanted to know if the witness agreed that the figures on the two exhibits were different. Afar-Gyan confirmed that they were different.
He then offered to explain this difference. He said it could be because it was photocopied. "It can look blurred when it is photocopied" he said.
