Drama continues at the ongoing district assembly election as over-voting hit the Kwahu East Assembly, where the confirmation of president John Mahama’s nominee, Samuel Asamoah was being held.
The election was the second after the first one held on July 5 saw the president’s nominee rejected by the assembly members.
Confirming the incident on Asempa Fm’s Ekosii Sen programme on Thursday, presiding member of the assembly, Daniel Kwame Agyapong noted that 33 people were qualified to cast their votes but after the process, 37 ballots were found in the box.
“So obviously, there is over-voting so the election is now abandoned”, the presiding officer told host of the show, Kwadwo Asare Baffuor Acheampong (KABA).
He revealed that the assembly members were surprised at this irregularity and were meeting to resolve the issue.
Kweku Addo, an assembly member also spoke to Myjoyonline.com and revealed, allegations of bribery in the elections. He said members sympathetic to the nominee were allegedly given GHc1,500 to vote.
He said in view of the rejection of the nominee, the president would have to re-nominate another person.
The election was supervised by an officer of the eastern regional electoral commission.
The nominee of the assembly, Samuel Asamoah when contacted, refused to comment on the controversy but confirmed the incident
