Daily Searchlight Editor Ken Kuranchies and NDC Communicator Stephen Atubiga have painted very conflicting pictures about prison conditions following their brief stay in three of Ghana’s prisons.
The two ex-convicts were speaking on Adom TV Pampaso talk show on Friday, hosted by Kofi Adoma Nwawani.
While Kuranchie painted a very damning picture of the Nsawam and Ho Prisons, Atubiga was full of praises for government for the conditions he met at the Nsawam and Akuse prisons.
Atubiga noted that government has provided beds, mattresses and mosquito nets for the prisoners, and the food served in jail was like what they serve in boarding schools in Ghana.
“On my first night at the prison the inmates gave me tea with bread and fried eggs and I felt that was very welcoming because I was very hungry then,” he said.
Atubiga also said while he was there, government provide Medisoft soaps for each prisoner and it was distributed among them and he got one.
He said even though the prison limits inmates' freedoms, it provides hope for some inmates who would rather live in the prisons than go home because they have three square meals in prison.
“I commend the late President John Evans Atta Mills for the transformation I saw in the prisons and I recommend that every leader should have that experience because it prepares you to survive any condition as a leader,” he said.
