Nana Akomea, Director of Communications of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has admonished President John Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, act swiftly on what he describes as damning report on the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency. According to him, failure by the president to act expeditiously on the serious matter of financial malfeasance will throw his credibility to the dogs. Reports of financial misappropriation of funds at GYEEDA occasioned an investigation by the government. Minister for Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, set up a five-member committee to investigate the reports. The committee concluded its investigation and presented its report to president Mahama who then promised to act swiftly on it. Many have challenged the government to make the report public but government through deputy Minister of Information, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu has said government will not be stampeded into releasing the report. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii-Sen on Monday, Nana Akomea doubted government's sincerity in dealing with the report. He said given government's own ineptitude on previous corruption allegations it was difficult to expect anything different from the government. He however asserted that if president Mahama wants to move away from NDC’s legacy of corruption over the years, then the opportunity is to prosecute officials involved in the “scandalous report of financial malfeasance at GYEEDA”. “If John Mahama wants to move away from NDC’s legacy of corruption to Ghanaians over the years, then he should prosecute government officials involved in this scandalous GYEEDA report. Mahama must be up and doing on the report otherwise his credibility will be thrown to the dogs. Looking at how things are going I doubt something concrete will be done on it because this same NDC government promised to act on the Mabey and Johnson case but we never heard anything. Even look at the Amidu case on Waterville and Isofoton, what has been done so far? Nothing. So I will not be surprised if nothing is done” he claimed. The former Youth and Employment minister under the erstwhile Kufuor administration opined that president Mahama will receive the full backing of all Ghanaians including the political parties so the onus lies on him to start implementing the findings. He hinted that the recent report is the fourth investigation instituted by the government on GYEEDA and the findings are similar so there should not be any problem for the presidency to take action on it. “The recommendations of the report should be applied fully. If I who worked at the ministry for 2 years is found culpable, I should be dealt with. If it also my fellow colleagues who worked at the ministry, same should be applied to them because the country cannot afford to be losing monies to individuals like that. It is really disturbing”.
