The Greater Accra Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Joseph Ade Coker, says the party has some reservations about a number of President Mahama’s appointments of Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) and District Chief Executives (DCEs) in the capital.
Speaking to Joy News, Ade Coker said his outfit has a position on the appointment made by the president and the position is that: "We believe that as a regional party, we have to make some inputs regarding the nomination or re-nomination of MCEs and DCEs in the region."
He said they have sent their position to the presidency and he hopes their position will be taken into consideration in the appointments to ensure "sanity" in the region.
Asked whether or not he thinks some of the president's new appointments will not be in the interest of the party, Mr Coker said: "Precisely and we have made this known very clearly to the authorities that for us these MCEs have worked very hard in the districts and they have been part of the better Ghana agenda; they worked very hard and we feel a second look must be made to all the decisions that were made."
Whilst admitting that they were consulted before the appointments were made, he was quick to add that "parochial and and ethnic interest" have taken centre stage in the appointment of MMDCEs
"And we feel that we should put aside all those interests and look at the larger interest of the party because we need to reward hard work."
He would not argue with the views of the president on the appointment made but said "being on the ground we also have ears on the ground; at least as members of the party we are also entitled to make our opinion."
Ade Coker said the Greater Accra NDC office has formally written to the President to express its reservations with some of the appointments.
Waves of protest by supporters of the governing NDC have characterised President John Mahama’s nominations for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives.
Recently, angry NDC Youth in Salaga in the East Gonja District of the Northern Region destroyed properties and billboards bearing the name of President John Dramani Mahama.
The youth were protesting over the decision by the president to nominate Mohammed Amin Lukman as District Chief Executive for the area.
Demonstrations against MMDCE nominees, some of whom are being retained, have also taken place in the Ashanti, Eastern, Bono-Ahafo and Central regions.
Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Akwasi Opong-Fosu has directed regional Ministers to act in the stead of replaced Municipal and District Chief Executives until permanent appointments are made in some cases.
Coker said they are awaiting a response from the president.
