Former NPP MP for Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, Maxwell Kofi Jumah has said the kind of corruption captured in the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) investigation Report showed “Ghana is the most corrupt country in the whole world”. Speaking Wednesday on Adom FM’s morning show ‘Dwaso Nsem’, Kofi Jumah told show host Captain Smart American is a corrupt society but the type of corrupt practices in Ghana could never happen in the USA. “America is very corrupt society - they admit to it but the type of corruption in Ghana like the ones cited in the GYEEDA Report can never happen in the United States of America,” Jumah stated. The outspoken former MP was sharing his thoughts on the controversies surrounding the GYEEDA Report that President John Mahama has appointed another committee, headed by Senior Presidential Advisor, Paul Victor Obeng to study and recommend the appropriate actions to the president. The Report recommended the abrogation of contracts between government on one hand and Zoomlion, RLG Communications, and Goodwill International Group on the other hand, and it also referred a number of GYEEDA officials to the Attorney-General for prosecution. President Mahama promised a radical review and restructuring of GYEEDA when the Report was submitted to him, but critics say the president has rather been slow to act on the recommendations of the Report. Kofi Jumah however applauded the formation of the committee to look into GYEEDA’s activities as a move in the right direction, and noted that the investigation was necessary because “GYEEDA was originally set up to absorb unemployed youth in Ghana but has it has shifted focus.” Meanwhile, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Junior blamed the mess at GYEEDA on the fact that GYEEDA itself did not have the capacity to evaluate the contracts it entered to make sure that the country got value for money. Kwesi Pratt Junior said he is very excited that the Report is out to deal with people who were cited for alleged fraud. He however noted that the most important thing is to establish a proper legal frame work to guide GYEEDA in its contractual activities adding that the Ministry of Youth and Sports must also set up a board that will look at the deals GYEEDA goes into. Pratt said the Ministry must also employ qualified people to work at GYEEDA to reduce the irregularities and alleged malpractices mentioned in the report. He has also appealed to the various political parties not to politicize the content of the GYEEDA Report.
