The opposition New Patriotic Party is asking the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpujie, to revert the name of the Accra Sports Stadium to Ohene Djan.
Speaking to Joy News, the NPP’s Director of Communication, Nana Akomea, said the party is asking for the change of name because the Metropolitan Assembly has no right to rename national institutions.
According to Mr Akomea, although attempts by the Mayor to change the name of the National hockey stadium was quashed recently, the national sports stadium, which was renamed in 2009 is still outstanding.
"That’s a bigger and more prominent national facility...it is some unresolved matter that also has to be tackled” Nana Akomea added.
He also stated that way the office of the president issued a public summon of the Mayor and the metropolitan assembly undermined the authority of the Mayor and subjected him to humiliation.
