A joint police-military team has been deployed in the Nkwanta North constituency of the Volta Region, to maintain calm and order following a violent protest by NDC youth activists there Thursday. The irate youth vandalized property to protest the possible retention of the current District Chief Executive for the area, Paul Levin Gyato. The NDC constituency Secretary, Joseph Wombe had earlier told Joy News President Mahama had been petitioned on several occasions to refrain from re-nominating Mr. Gyato. The Nkwanta District Police Commander ASP Daniel Ametepe told Joy News they are finding it difficult to find the culprits since they are even yet to be identified. The youth in the area have fled into the bush, the commander observed. He however said personnel of the military detached in the area have been beefed up, and calm has returned to the area. Meanwhile, the NDC youth there earlier Friday held a news conference on Thursday’s disturbances. Isaac Mintah of Lorlornyo FM told Joy News the press conference was to officially voice out their concern and explain what led to the rampage. The youth, he said, described the DCE as a "traitor" and someone who has failed in his duty to unite grassroots members of the party. He said the youth claimed when announcement about his renomination got to town, members of the NPP rather jubilated, which they said is indicative of the perception that he is rather working for the opposition party. But the youth did not suggest any name for consideration, Mintah reported. Deputy General Secretary of the NDC George Lawson told Joy News what they did yesterday was "very wrong" but the party is yet to identify those involved in the violent act. He said as they wait for briefing from the regional executives to know the way forward, the youth have been asked to remain calm. Mr Lawson reiterated that the youth have been admonished not to repeat that unlawful behaviour, but should at all time use legitimate means to address their concern. He also want the law of the land to take its full course against the protesters because "nobody is above the law".
