NDC executives in the Nkawanta North constituency in the Volta Region are protesting against the arrest of 25 members of the party for vandalism.
The youth last Thursday went on a rampage and set ablaze at least five government vehicles as they demonstrated against the President’s nomination of Paul Levin Gyato, as DCE for the area.
25 of the youth are now behind bars as investigations continue but, constituency executives of the party are accusing the president’s appointed DCE of engineering what they call the vindictive arrests.
They are also unhappy with regional executives of the ruling party for failing to intervene in the matter.
Joseph Wombe is the NDC constituency secretary for Nkwanta North told Joy News, "If indeed they want the party to be strengthen then it is up to especially the regional executives to rise up."
According to him, several attempts to reach the regional executives to address the issue have proved futile and wondered whether it was deliberate on the part of the DCE to "molest" the youth.
Meanwhile, the police have served notice that they will deal decisively with all rampaging NDC youth who resort to violence to register their protest against Presidential appointments to district assemblies.
DSP Cephas Arthur, Head of Public Affairs at the Police Headquarters. told Joy News, "crime does not wear party colours and once activities that are undertaken by individuals bother on criminalities we shall not look at any bias."
In a related development, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Volta Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council has assured aggrieved NDC supporters in the Nkwanta North Constituency of further broad consultations on the appointment of the DCE.
