A former National Youth Organiser for the Convention People's Party, James Kwabena Bomfeh says the several protests over president John Mahama's nominations for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, is
indicative of the abysmal performance of government.
Mr. Kwabena Bomfeh also known as Kabila, believes the prominent of two reasons why there have been numerous rejections of President Mahama's MMDCE nominees, is that his government is unpopular.
He said the economic hardships coupled with lawlessness in the country have caused people to view every government action with suspicion, even when it could be beneficial to them.
He admits that similar rejections of MMDCEs happened under other administrations, but the intensity of the situation currently is the result of a corresponding high displeasure of the current administration among Ghanaians.
Commenting on the widespread agitations against the President's MMDCE nominees on Peace FM's Kokrokoo MOnday, Kabila observed MMDCEs are in essence representatives of the people in an Assembly, hence people in the districts feel they must know them. He stressed, it is when 'aliens' are imposed on the people in a district that they show their disapproval through agitations.
He claims even though the Constitution stipulates that the President's appointment must be approved by not less than two-thirds majority of members of the Assembly, this is not the case.
He claimed there have been attempts to keep the nominees in certain districts even after appointed MMDCEs failed to secure the adequate votes from the Assembly members.
In his view, the Committee assisting the President with MMDCE appointments has failed to properly identify persons who are popular with the Assembly and the people in a district.
Kabila stressed, it is important that the people in a district approve of a nominee because the people must feel comfortable that the person chosen has their interest at heart.
He however condemned the violent agitations by NDC youth in parts of the country in protest against the MMDCE nominees. He admonished them to seek redress though proper channels.
