The Hohoe Magistrate court has denied a request for bail by lawyers of eight suspected NDC hooligans who were arrested for allegedly destroying state property.
They have thus been remanded at the Kpando prison to reappear on August 12.
The suspects were arrested and charged for destroying government vehicles in protest over the president's decision to retain the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Paul Levin Gyato.
26 of them were picked up but seven were released after preliminary investigations. Out of the 19 remaining, 11 were issued with warning letters by the Volta Region police for playing "minimal roles" in the vandalism. The eight left were however put before court on Monday on charges of unlawful entry, conspiracy to commit crime and causing damage.
The Lawyer for the suspects pleaded with the Magistrate to grant them bail, a request which was turned down.
A bench warrant has also been issued for the arrest of 11 other persons including the Constituency Secretary of the NDC. The incumbent MP for Nkwanta North and the constituency secretary also have questions to answer after the MP allegedly wrote a letter in February to the Bureau for National Investigations to protest against the re-nomination of the DCE.
The regional leadership of the party had been negotiating with the police to secure their release, Joy News has learnt. The Chairman of the Volta regional NDC Kwesi Aboagye says the party will be setting up a disciplinary committee to investigate hooliganism by the foot soldiers and also suspend those involved.
