Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice under the Kufuor administration, Joseph Ayikoi-Otoo who helped Sir John and Hopeson Adorye to escape jail sentences, has urged the media not to give their platforms to inexperienced and propagandist lawyers.
He noted that the media often call on some junior lawyers who do not have enough experience to comment on legal matters that are beyond them, adding “this practice must stop because it can land both the lawyer in question and the media house in trouble.”
Ayikoi Otoo was speaking Wednesday on Adom FM/Asempa FM’s Burning Issues program.
The legal luminary said it is not everybody who calls himself a lawyer who may have the requisite experience to educate the public on issues like the one pending before the Supreme Court.
He believes radio commentators have learnt a lot from what happened to Sir John, Hopeson Adorye and the others before them about what the Supreme Court is capable of doing.
Commenting on his strategy in court he said, “if you look at the charges facing your client and you compare it to what he has said, the only way is to go to the court and apologize not to defend your matter.”
Asked if he thought Lawyer Samuel Atta-Akyea did not do well from Ken Kuranchie who got similar charges and was sentenced to 10 days in jail, Mr. Otoo said he did not want to compare his strategy with that of Lawyer Atta-Akyea.
