Ghana’s economic growth is still lagging behind population growth as relatively young population of close to 72% of the population under the ages of 25 years does present the country with a number of development challenges.
Leader’s vision for Ghana should be about change, possibilities and potentials of the future for the youth. Let us uphold the promise of prosperity, the vision within our voices, the dream of a new destiny, the power for the youth and the privilege to transform Ghana focusing on the youth.
The Youth are wasting their lives into Alcohol (Akpeteshie) and substance abuse which has inhibits control centers in their brain. A result is that a person under the influence may become more prone to violent behavior and responds more aggressively to provocation. Our survey has revealed that 72% of Ghanaian youth are wallowing in abject poverty.
We should be the social conscience of the people, everybody personally feel sad whenever we hear people saying "the youth are the future leaders" then we ask ourselves, do the youth really have a future?
There have been so much programmes, meetings and conferences all made in the name of the youth and yet only little development in the aspect of the youth has been recognized. It is true that the future of a great nation depends on the shoulders of a responsible youth and yet the youth of Ghana have been neglected to wallow in poverty.
Some of us were born right here in the city and ever since our ability to travel to the deprived communities is limited; we have only little knowledge about the bitterness of life in the deprived communities. Fifty- six (56) years of independence for mother Ghana and yet the youth in this country are still under slavery.
The rights of the youth are limited in all angles, and we think it is time we the youth of this great nation stand tall to make our country free from joblessness and unemployed graduate.
Leaders need to help the dreams for the youth become a reality. Quality training and skills that would enable the youth contribute more effectively to national development. We should create youth activity centers by transforming traditional apprenticeship and on-the-job training programmes to enable beneficiaries acquire relevant skills for self employment.
There is the need to promote national cohesion rather than promoting illegality. We should promote leadership development not only using leadership concept but also as an academic discipline in a bid to empower the youth of the country in general.
We should instill discipline, patriotism and eschewing corruption, bribery, tribalism and selfishness. The call for youth leaders is necessary, by us expecting the riches of freedom and security of justice for all people. Our country needs to be lifted from the quick sand of injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
We should measure our progress by the improvement in the health of our youth, by the number of children in school, by the quality of their education, by the availability of water and electricity in towns and villages, the happiness and welfare of our people should be our chief pride and it is these that Ghana would be judged.
VODEC is pleading with the youth to be cautious with their actions and be peer educators for their fellow youth.
The task of our age should be the task of thinking. If the statement that thoughts are things is true, then we must realize that the things going on in Ghana are but the reflection of thought, let us change our thinking about Ghana and Ghana will change for us.
