Hundreds of Zamalek ultras stormed the club’s headquarters in Cairo calling for an immediate change in the club’s leading board.
The fierce protest, which comes in the wake of a thumping 4-2 Champions League defeat to arch-rivals Ahli, is mainly staged against under-fire chairman Mamdouh Abbas.
Although no casualties have been reported so far, Zamalek were forced to evacuate the club, turn off the lights and close the gates in fear of further tension.
Ahram Online reported that police forces had to fire tear gas to separate the crowd, with several minor scuffles taking place with the fans – mainly believed to be members of Ultras White Knights.
It was also reported that the angry fans burnt a police vehicle in addition to causing some damages inside the club.
Horror and panic
Meanwhile, Zamalek issued a statement on their website condemning the demonstrations and claiming that the storming the club’s gates caused ‘panic and horror’ among members.
Zamalek chairman Abbas also commented on the incident, vowing to take action against those who want to ‘destroy the club’.
“Those who are keen to destroy the club’s assets and strike fear into the hearts of its members, cannot be considered true Zamalek faithful,” Abbas told Zamalek’s website.
“The club will take necessary measures to ensure the security of our property and the safety of our members.”
Zamalek are without a trophy since winning the Egypt Cup five years ago, enduring a number of unprecedented lows in the process.
Chairman Abbas has been consistently complaining of financial issues, a mounting predicament that has been hitting the club for several years now.
