A circuit court at Cape Coast on Tuesday granted Kojo Awere alias Kwadea, a driver, 50 million cedis bail, with one surety to be justified, for allegedly stealing a taxi cab valued at 20 million cedis belonging to one Mr Timothy Mensah.
Awere pleaded not guilty and will reappear on Monday February 26.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court presided over by Mr Beresford Acquah that on December 30 last year at about 22:30 hours, the complainant parked his Opel Kadet Taxi cab at Yamoransa, near the Catholic Church after the day's work.
He said the next day, he found that the vehicle had been stolen and efforts made to trace it in the town, proved futile.
The prosecution said the complainant reported the matter to the police at Cape Coast, who also alerted other police stations nationwide of the missing vehicle.
Chief Inspector Amonoo said on January 7 this year, the Suame police in Kumasi informed their counterparts in Cape Coast that Awere had been arrested for attempting to sell the said taxicab to a car dealer in Kumasi.
He said Awere was brought to Cape Coast with the vehicle, and that all efforts to arrest two other accomplices who the police in Kumasi said were with Awere when he attempted to sell the vehicle, have proved futile.
He said during investigations it came to light that Awere had been involved in another robbery case, which was before court, but he went into hiding when he was granted bail.
