The Danish healthcare company Novo Nordisk yesterday opened the Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. At the opening ceremony, the Danish ambassador to Ghana, Tove Degnbol expressed the importance of collaboration between the public sector and private companies, when working together on developing the health sector of Ghana.  ‘’Dealing with diseases like diabetes in addition to the already heavy burden on the health system requires new ways of doing ‘business’. Private-sector participation has become key to providing quality service in the health sector,’’ she said and continued: ‘’After many years of development cooperation in the health sector, Denmark and Ghana have built a strong partnership, which supports the development of public-private partnerships like this one with Novo Nordisk.’’  Abigail Chakava, Projects and Public Affairs Manager, Middle Africa Novo Nordisk adds: ‘’We are committed to having strategic partnerships to implement programmes and initiatives that bring support and relief to both patients and healthcare professionals. Public-private partnerships are key in order to do this,’’ she said in her speech.  The representative from Novo Nordisk, Abigail Chakava, Projects and Public Affairs Manager, Middle Africa Novo Nordisk, gave a speech.  Diabetes an undetected problem in Ghana According to the International Diabetes Federation, 257,600 people in Ghana remain undiagnosed, which poses an increased risk of complications for people living with diabetes without knowing it. The new Novo Nordisk Centre of Excellence will play a key role in screening patients for early diagnosis, managing complications associated with diabetes, coordinating the training of health care professionals, and providing access to quality insulin for thousands of people in the Kumasi area and beyond. The Embassy of Denmark in Accra has been supporting Novo Nordisk and their partners with their activities in Ghana to improve care for people with diabetes since 2014.
