The Ghana Food Movement (GFM) will launch its manifesto at THEIA Coffeehouse and food hub in Accra on the eve of Farmers’ Day celebration. Over the past few months, a diverse group of Ghanaian and Accra-based food professionals, chefs, scientists, policymakers, farmers, food enthusiasts, agriculturalists, entrepreneurs and journalists have come together to form Ghana Food Movement. This grassroots movement aims to bring people together who are interested in our global food system and have a passion for Ghanaian food - and making this future proof. “We want everyone in Ghana to know their culture and ingredients, be proud of it and respect the environment, diversity and it’s producers,” the Movement said. The Group believes in order to face challenges that lie ahead like loss of food culture and identity, loss of biodiversity, unhealthy diet, food security and climate change, consumers need to be informed and professionals throughout the food chain need to work together to shape the future of our food (system) and change it for the better. Through an online platform and offline events and meet-ups, the Ghana Food Movement wants to build a strong, diverse network and facilitate dialogue with stakeholders. The Movement will support initiatives building towards a better food system in Ghana, celebrate Ghanaian culinary heritage, reinvent Ghanaian cuisine and create awareness around food in Ghana. “We want Ghana to depend less on food imports. We should be promoting local, indigenous and/or sustainable food production and wasting less,” Ghana Food Movement said. According to the Group, supporting stakeholders in the food chain on their mission and changing a system is no easy task, therefore, they have organised the open forum to make everybody feel included and empowered in this joint quest. Only together change can be created. During the launch of the GFM and the presentation of the Manifesto, everybody is welcome and can bring food or drinks to share to symbolize the strong unifying power of food. "The Ghana Food Movement is an amplifier. We highlight, empower and connect what is already happening in Ghana. By connecting with each other and working together we can make a change in Ghana faster and bigger," the group said.
