Dr. Mrs Juliet Ghartey, wife of Dr. Nunoo Ghartey, a medical practitioner and former Central Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was arraigned before an Accra Magistrate’s court for assaulting her, says her husband acted out of jealousy.
She said her husband, who made his second appearance before the court last Monday, thought that her guest, Harouna Ibrahim, who was allegedly being investigated for gun running, was her new "catch" and thus assaulted her.
Mrs. Ghartey, who was being cross-examined by the counsel for the accused, Nancy Ampanful, told the court that her guest was in the country to sponsor women’s initiative programme dubbed "Wise Event" which was being launched in Accra.
She, therefore, debunked an assertion by the counsel for the accused that her guest was being investigated for gun running by the security personnel who besieged her Airport residence to question her on the same issue.
Mrs. Ghartey later told the Spectator that she dismissed her driver when she got to know that he was an informant of her husband, who was monitoring her movement.
When contacted by this reporter to comment on the issue Dr. Ghartey remarked, I wont make any comment. Let her finish with her story and I will follow suit. You can then come with your cameraman to take more exclusive pictures."
Dr. Ghartey was said to have punched the face of his wife thrice in the full glare of security personnel who were searching her Airport residence in a gun running case on June 3, 2006.
It took the intervention of some of the security personnel to stop him from further punishing his wife who is seeking divorce after six years of marriage.
