The second batch of Junior Officers of the Immigration Service trained for the implementation of the Border Patrol Programme has passed out at the Immigration training School at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.
The 200 recruits form the 11th intake of the school. They underwent a four-month intensive physical and academic training at the school.
The Reviewing Officer was Deputy Minister for the Interior, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu.
He stressed that dynamics of globalisation have necessitated a re-appraisal of the country's border management system. The establishment of the Border Patrol Unit within the Immigration Service is therefore of the highest national interest.
Mr. Agyeman-Manu admitted that the national borders are porous and the management system operating now is ineffective. The vulnerable situation, he said has made it easy for criminal elements to engage in cross-border criminal activities such as human and drug trafficking, passport racketeering and arms smuggling.
The Minister stressed that this situation is a serious concern to government.
He therefore charged the recruits to come out imbued with a patriotic zeal to help deal with the situation.
Mr. Agyeman-Manu expressed government"s contentment for the Immigration Service in implementing the Border Patrol Programme. He said the role of the Immigration Service has become more critical in view of the 50th Anniversary celebration.
He tasked personnel to be professional in their duties to give the country a good image. The Over-All Best Recruit Award went to Christopher Torgbenu. Richmond Fianu took the best in Drill Award while Irene Zaato emerge the most Disciplined Recruit.
