The Winneba District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police Jordan Quaye has appealed to women in the district who are prepared to satisfy legal terms governing sureties to come forward to bail suspects.
He said there was no law baring women from bailing suspects.
He explained that the law required anyone who stood surety for a suspect to pay twice the bond when the suspect absconded and that most women were not prepared to face the consequence.
ASP Quaye said no money should be paid before a suspect was granted bail, adding any official payment to the police requires an official receipt, without which such payment should not be made.
He pointed out that monetary bargain over bail was criminal and such acts should be reported to Superior Officers.
“The Ghana Police Service is not a business-oriented enterprise that bargains with the public for services rendered,” he stated.
ASP Quaye said suspects should not be detained for more than 48 hours as stipulated by law.Source: GNA
