About 600 cocoa haulers at the Takoradi Harbour have their tools seeking to press home their demand for improved conditions of service. The workers say they are being unfairly treated by the Cocoa Marketing Company which makes every group of twelve carriers load 3,200 bags of cocoa beans into ships. That they say was callous and inhuman.Speaking to Joy News, a spokesperson for the workers, George Antwi said the workers would not go back to work until their Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions were refunded to them.According him, although the SSNIT contributions of the workers had been deducted for the past five years, the deductions had not reflected on their pay slips.
The strike has left heaps of cocoa bags in trucks at the harbour waiting to be carted into ships. The irate workers also contend that there is no clean drinking water at the shed where they work, exposing them to serious health hazards.
