The Volta Regional Police Command has expressed concern about the increasing use of vehicles with RT(Republic of Togo) registered numbers by people, some in responsible positions in the Region.
He said the practice was an affront to the law, which only allowed for the use of foreign registration vehicles by visitors to Ghana or Ghanaians living abroad who visit home for a short period.
A statement signed by Bernard Dery, Regional Commander said an exercise to rid the Region of such vehicles would continue "without fear or favour".
The statement said many people staying permanently in Ghana were keeping those vehicles, which they used at odd hours to beat the Police.
It directed them to report with their vehicles to the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) offices to process papers, pay the appropriate taxes and have them properly registered.
The statement addressed to heads of all security services, departments, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), district assemblies and traditional councils warned that the police "shall not spare any offender regardless of ones social status".
It said the Police were mindful of the fact that the Volta Region shared a common border with Togo, from where these vehicles were purchased and that there was an ECOWAS Protocol on the Free Movement of People and Transit Goods.
The statement said the laws governing the operations of such protocols would guard the Police in their clampdown on those keeping vehicles with such numbers illegally.
It said such vehicle could be used in cross-border crimes.
There is a thriving automobile market in, Lome capital of Togo, where people, including public servants purchase cars cheaply, but keep them on arriving back in Ghana for months to enable them raise the high taxes to get them properly registered.
