One person out of four who sustained injuries in the Bawku ethnic conflict is reported dead at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital where they had been on admission since February 27, 2008.The death of Awudu Anesibi, a 35-year-old man from Patelmi, a suburb of Bawku, was confirmed by a source at the hospital.The three others are responding to treatment at the same hospital.The names of the injured have been given as Latif Yusif, 27, Abanga Kwesi, 30, and Mahama Bukari, 30.The source told the Daily Graphic that the deceased was admitted on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, as a result of physical assault from a group of people but he died two days later. The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Abdulai Abanga, in a telephone interview, indicated that in spite of the recent incident, life in the area was returning to normal, saying, "I can confidently say that peace has been restored to Bawku.""The people have expressed regret that such a thing happened and pledged to live in peace. Some of them promised not to venture into any violent act because they lost many valuables," he stressed.The MCE said schools in the area were in session, while the main market had been opened for brisk business.He appealed to both factions not to be complacent about the peace restored to the area but to ensure that lasting peace and harmony prevailed in Bawku."I urge any resident to report to the police and the other security agencies people they suspect to be fanning the conflict so that the law would take its course," he said.He noted that the security agencies had changed their strategy from street patrols to community patrols to ensure that no skirmishes occurred again.He appealed to prominent citizens and opinion leaders to continue to advise the youth on the need to live in peace and harmony, stressing that "they must all resolve to practise the peace accord they agreed upon".The MCE further appealed to civil and public servants who had deserted the municipality following the recent incidents to resume work to enhance the socio-economic development of the area.Source: Daily Graphic
