Tension is high in Bawku in the Upper East region and surrounding communities following outbreak of fresh violence last night.
There are reports of sporadic gunshots in the area. Two men have been reported killed in the violence. The two identified as a Hausa and a Moshie were on their way to Burkina Faso through a short route when they were gunned down. The bodies are reported to have been retrieved by the military.
Bawku has been under a curfew for some time now following the eruption of conflict between Kusasis and Mamprusis over a chieftaincy dispute on New Year's Eve, 2007.
News monitored on Citi FM says some residents have shot at a military patrol vehicle and injured a military officer in the process. The officer was not identified and the reporter did not say if the military returned fire.
Speaking on his way out of Bawku township, Citi FM Correspondent, Karim Nantongma said, residents of Bawku are holed up in their rooms and no one dared come out.
At the time he was speaking to Citi News Anchor, Fred Tsidi, he said he had escaped from Bawku and was heading towards Bolgatanga for safety.
Meanwhile, the military and police joint patrol have intensified their patrol of the area.
In response to the mounting tension, the Interior Ministry has reviewed the curfew hours in Bawku. The new curfew hours are from 3:00pm to 7:00am.
