Residents of Agona Swedru and its environs in the Central Region are living in fear with some confined to self-imposed curfew following the, performance of some strange juju rituals by the youth in some parts of the town. The youth, known as 'pen pal boys' are said to have shifted from their previous mode of using nude pictures of innocent girls to woo pen pals abroad, to performing rituals with human parts to "convince their pen pals to send them huge sums of money". It is widely believed that these rituals which have made people to walk alone in the nights, are performed with human parts in small coffins with signs of the cross drawn on them. They normally dump the coffins containing the human parts like fingers, intestines and palms in isolated places in the town. Last Sunday witnessed one of these awful scenes at Abosso AME Zion School Complex at Swedru which attracted commuters from all walks of life. Narrating the incident to this reporter, the Assistant Headmaster of the school, Mr Afranie Mensah, said they reported in the morning at the school to undertake classes with the JSS 3 candidates at about 6.30 a.m. on Sunday morning to meet a crowd gathered around the school. He said when he drew nearer, he saw to his amazement a coffin containing human flesh so he rushed to inform his colleague, Mr Lawrence Oduro Nkrumah, who lived near the school. They returned to find the flesh burnt beyond recognition. One of the students told this reporter that a certain man appeared on the scene, used a sharp machete to slash his left arm, sprinkled the blood an the flesh, poured petrol on it and set it on fire before fleeing the scene. According to most people interviewed, such rituals have become ram¬pant, thereby compelling parents to keep their children indoors. However, the Swedru District Police Commander, Supt. R. B. Bakamoro, described it as rumour, since no official report had been made to the police. But some police officers confirmed the activities of the 'pen pal boys' who identified themselves with the use of VW Golf cars, describing their activities as worrying and a nuisance.
