A group from the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) yesterday demonstrated at the Greater Accra Regional office of the party against what they termed as an attempt by the regional executive to re-open nomination for Mrs Frema Osei Opare, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, as an aspiring parliamentary candidate for the constituency to file her nomination. They claimed that although Mrs Opare was their incumbent, once the nomination closed on March 31, it would be unconstitutional for either the constituency or the regional office to re-open nominations again
for her.According to them, the constituency chairman, Mr Michael Omare Wadie, recently told them at a meeting that although nominations had been closed, Mrs Opare could file nomination if the national executive gave
the order as per the NPP constitution.
However, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, told the Daily Graphic that the national headquarters of the party had received the completed forms of Mrs Opare alongside
others. He also explained that the forms were given to Mrs Opare by the national headquarters of the party when they received a complaint that she was finding it difficult to secure one from the constituency office.Nana Ntow said the MP completed the forms and submitted them to the constituency secretary, John Twumasi, which had been forwarded with other forms to the national headquarters as was the case with all
nominations forms nationwide. At the Greater Accra Regional office of the party where the demonstration took place, the regional organiser, Mr Albert Afaglo, told the demonstrating youth that neither the regional or constituency office could re-open nomination, and that that authority to re-open nominations was the prerogative of the national executive alone, according to the party’s constitution. When contacted, the constituency chairman, Mr Wadie, denied frustrating the efforts of Mrs Opare to secure forms from the constituency. He alleged that when Mrs Opare was told of the availability of the form, she said she had her own source of securing the forms. He also said Mr Twumasi had been suspended as a constituency secretary, therefore, it would be wrong for anybody to deal with him as the incumbent secretary of the constituency.Source: Daily Graphic
