The Military in Tamale have been accused of brutalising citizens in the area following a violent clash between youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).According to accounts the clash erupted Monday night, June 9, 2008 when NDC youth destroyed a pavilion belonging to the NPP. The NPP youth were reported to have reacted by also destroying property belonging to the NDC youth.Joy News Northern Regional correspondent, Shaibu Mahama said gun fire was exchanged during the conflict, leaving some of the youth with gun shot wounds.The Military were reportedly called in to control the clash. According to reports, the Military arrested about 40 people and brutalised them.One of the victims of the Military brutalities, Alhassan Seidu Seini, who is also the Assemblyman for Chagni told Joy News that while in the custody of the Military, they were forced to slap one another in the face five times each.He said, at the time he was speaking to Joy News, he was suffering from a swollen jaw. He also said, they were made to lie on the bare floor and asked to look directly at the sun. And while they were lying on the floor, they were made to sing repeatedly that they would not commit the offence for which they were arrested again.The 40 people arrested, have since been placed in Police custody, but they are yet to be charged.Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale, Mohammed Amin Anta has denied the reports. He told Joy News that, contrary to what is being said, the Military did not brutalise anyone.
