The NDC Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Alhaji Collins Dauda says Mr. Osafo Maafo must be tried for ‘willfully causing financial loss to the state.
He said the former Finance Minister ignored warnings that his pursuit of the CNTC and the IFC loans would not yield any results.
Alhaji Dauda told Joy News that the then Minority Spokesperson on Finance, Mr. Moses Asaga cautioned of the bleak prospects of the loans.
But Mr. Maafo overlooked the warnings and refused to withdraw from the deal.
According to him, the Minister plunged public money in a venture that did not inure to the benefit of the state.
Alhaji Dauda wondered why the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has not tried Mr. Osafo Maafo.
A number of former NDC ministers have fallen foul of the law on ‘willfully causing financial loss to the state.
They include former Finance Minister Kwame Peprah and his deputy, Victor Selormey, and former Trade and Industry Minister, Mr. Dan Abodakpi.
Mr. Abodapki however had a reprieve from the president relieving him of the rest of his ten-year jail.
The latest victim is the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Tsatsu Tiskata.
He was sentenced to five years imprisonment on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, on four counts of causing financial loss of ¢2.3 billion to the state and misapplying public property.
The money was in respect of a loan he, acting on behalf of the GNPC, guaranteed Valley Farms Limited, a private cocoa producing company in 1991.
