The perception in some political circles that President John Kufuor is working against the governing New Patriotic Party flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in respect of the December polls, based on certain decisions he has taken recently, will be put to rest soon. This is because come July 13, at Kasoa Old Market in the Central Region, the President will symbolically hand over the flagship of the NPP to Nana Akufo-Addo to lead the party into victory, in the 2008 general elections. The rally will be the first major gathering of the party supporters drawn across the country to usher in the full force of the NPP Campaign Team for the polls. At the same event, all the parliamentary aspirants of the party for 2008 polls will also be officially outdoored for the people to know their representatives. President Kufuor, at a recent sod-cutting ceremony in Kumasi to commence the construction of the 3.2km Oforikrom-Asokwa by pass and the dualisation of the first 2.7km of Lake Road as well as the construction of Lake Road interchange in Kumasi told the people that the only honour they could bestow on him was to vote for the NPP flag bearer to succeed him and continue the good and solid foundation he (Kufuor) had laid for the nation. The high-profile party gurus who are expected to speak at the rally include the NPP flag bearer himself, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, Alan Kyerematen, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey (Campaign Chairman), Peter Mac Manu (NPP National Chairman), Nana Ohene Ntow (NPP General Secretary), Kofi Konadu Apraku (Campaign Director) and other personalities. Meanwhile, Lord Commey, the party's National Organizer, has disclosed that the campaign slogan for this year's elections is "NPP, We are Moving Forward." According to him, the ruling party had come a long way, and noted that under President Kufuor the country had witnessed a lot of developmental changes in all spheres of life adding," we believe it is time the nation moves on." In the 2000 elections, the NPP adopted the campaign slogan, 'Positive Change’ whilst in 2004 the party opted for ‘Positive Change, So far So Good.’ In view of the expected large number of party supporters to grace the Kasoa rally, The Statesman went to find out the security measures that had been put in place, following the appointment of Kwame Addo-Kufuor as the Interior Minister. Addo-Kufuor, MP for Manhyia and a former Defence Minister, until his new appointment, was the Chairman of the Security Committee of the NPP Campaign Team for up-coming elections. A reliable source told this paper that the NPP flag bearer was likely to be in charge of the security matters of the Campaign Team. The source however, hinted that the party leadership had to approve the decision before the flag bearer could chair the Committee. It will be recalled that at the Parliamentary Vetting Committee sitting which vetted Addo-Kufuor, some members of the Committee raised concerns of conflict of interest that is; serving as Chairman of NPP Security Committee and that of Interior Ministry.
