Two prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Colonel George Minyila (Rtd), former Ambassador to Burkina Faso, and Madam Beatrice Apuri, NPP Women's Organizer for Navrongo Central, say they were last Friday assaulted in Navrongo by a man during the campaign tour of the party’s presidential aspirant, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Col Minyila sustained a split lower lip while Madam Apuri got a swollen forehead after they were allegedly slapped in their faces by 38-year-old Mr. Wewura Feli, a party member.
Talking to the press in Bolgatanga on Wednesday, the Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent of Police Victor Agbetornyo said both cases were reported to the police and the assailant was arrested by the Navrongo police on July 19.
Explaining the events that led to the two incidents, Mr Agbetornyo said Col. Minyila had stopped the convoy of Nana Akufo-Addo around the St. John Bosco's Training College so he could, as an elder, lead it to the rally grounds in Navrongo but got slapped by Mr. Feli who accused him of trying to delay the convoy.
Madam Apuri was also hit in the face an hour later while trying to organize the people.
The Crime Officer said the assailant was later released on bail but asked to report to the police on regular basis until the case is settled.
He said even though Col. Minyila had written to the police to withdraw the case, the two incidents would still be investigated.
