MP for Adansi Asokwa and former Deputy Energy Minister, K.T. Hammond, has rubbished as ‘foolish’ and ‘silly,’ threats by members of the Committee for Joint Action, CJA, to campaign against and ensure parliamentarians who approve the Ghana Telecom sale to Vodafone lose their seats.The CJA members at a press conference last week said they were opposed to the sale arrangement to offload 70 percent of national interest in GT to UK’s Vodafone and would campaign against consenting MPs to ensure they lose their seats in the December Election.But KT Hammond told Joy News it is a most silly and foolish threat to come from the CJA, the political pressure group.“It is not for CJA or whatever their name is to tell me what to do. My constituents elected me to represent them to the best of my ability in the House of Parliament. It is not for CJA or whatever they represent to decide how I vote in parliament. I vote according to my own conscience, what I believe in, what my government stand for and what my electorates, my constituents expect me to do in the best of their interest. It is not what Kwesi Pratt and these people daring me to vote one way or the other and bear the consequence of an electoral process or verdict… They can pitch all the camp of the NDC in my constituency and we shall see the outcome of the election. It’s pretty silly. To me it is the tyranny of the tiny minority against the sensibilities and views of the very wide majority in the country,” he said.He said the “silly pronouncement” so annoys him he is at a loss who the “CDJ-A or whatever” is to issue such a statement to MPs. Hammond in the attached audio].The MP for Karaga, Iddrisu Dauda also did not agree with the CJA threat, and said even though his party, the National Democratic Congress was against the sale arrangement and would vote against it, there was no basis for the unfortunate CJA threat.“Campaign against me? Obviously that has nothing to do with me in my constituency. …I will not lose my constituency because of that sort of thing. In any case, it is the party’s stand that we are all going to vote for. The party is against the sale of GT to Vodafone so we are looking at it that way but to say that they will campaign against me to lose my seat in my constituency, that one I don’t agree with them.”Parliament failed to ratify the $900 million deal before rising a fortnight ago, however, there are indications the MPs may be recalled during the break to consider agreement.Government on Tuesday demonstrated a determined will to offload the loss making entity, explaining that further delays in keeping the national telecoms operator will lead to a further erosion of its value.Author: Isaac Yeboah
