Contributors to Joy FM’s Ghana Connect programme Friday have shared dissenting views on renouncing their citizenship as Ghanaians.

Some 817 Ghanaians have renounced their nationality to seek better livelihood in Germany, China and other countries in 2013.

Esi Smith, who has renounced her Ghanaian citizenship to become a German, insisted she had no choice than to switch nationality.

According to her, she enjoys all the basic necessities and amenities available in that country as against her native Ghana. She said her German passport gave her access to many opportunities.

Esi has been in Germany for the past eight years. She said though she loves being a Ghanaian; she is happier, feels safe and comfortable in a German environment.

Ben is also a Ghanaian with British citizenship. He argued that the exodus of Ghanaians to other countries is informed by neo-colonialism, a statement Esi Smith disagreed.

Ben said despite being a British, he has more opportunities in Ghana.

Ben further noted that government should have come out with data to know the number of persons leaving the shores of the country.

Others who appeared on the show urged the government to create the enabling environment aimed at attracting the masses to stay in the country.

A Minister of State in-charge of Public Private Partnership on the programme, Rashid Pelpuo said the current happenings calls for a revision on the way forward.

He observed that Ghana is a very strategic country in the sub-region and its citizens are respected everywhere in the world.
