A circuit court at Mpraeso on Tuesday sentenced Ibrahim Adjovi Mensah, a 26-year-old fisherman, who escaped from the Central Nkawkaw Police Station cell with nine other inmates last Sunday, to three years imprisonment. The escapee who was already facing a charge of robbery pleaded guilty to the charge of escaping from lawful custody but pleaded not guilty to the charges of causing damage and causing harm. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Boryor told the court that in the early hours of last Sunday, Adjovi and nine others cut the thick iron rods of the cell and escaped, but the fugitive was rearrested in the bush near the Nkawkaw Secondary School. The court adjourned to Tuesday 13th March to trial the convict for causing damage and causing harm. The Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander (ACOP), Ampah Benning, yesterday visited the Police Station and inspected the cell from where the inmates escaped. He said mental doors will be provided for the inner rooms of the cell to prevent future incidents. ACOP Benning advised the police to establish good relationship with members of the public, so that they could provide the personnel with information to enhance their performances. Nana Kofi Kesse, Kwahu West District Chief Executive and the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Mr Emmanuel Boansi Darkwa also inspected the cells. Nana Kesse gave the assurance that the assembly would support the police to enable personnel maintain law and order. He said the assembly had constructed a place of convenience in the cell while efforts were being made to extend pipe borne water to the facility. Source GNA
