President John Mahama and his Vice Kwesi Amissah Arthur Thursday morning joined ministers of state, hundreds of Ghanaians, wife and family members of the late President John Evans Atta Mills to mark the second anniversary of his passing.
The short ceremony was climaxed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Asomdwe Park near the Independence Square in Accra.
At the well-decorated Asomdwe Park sandwiched between the Independence Square and the Osu Castle, the Police Band perform a solemn rendition of Presbyterian Hymn 468.
President John Mahama, Vice President Amissah Arthur with his wife as well as the widow of President Mills, Naadu Mills and family members of the late family were present at the memorial service.
Former President Rawlings, Ministers of state, parliamentarians as well as members of the ruling National Democratic Congress were in attendance.
Conspicuously missing were members of the opposition parties.
Rev. Dr. Nii Amoo Darko delivered a soul-searching sermon in which he called on Ghanaians to not only to celebrate the legacy of the late President but also to remember their lives on earth are short and they would have to account for their existence on earth.
Then came the wreath laying ceremony. President Mahama layed the first wreath. He was followed by the widow of the late President Mrs Naadu Mills who broke down on her way to lay the second wreath.
The family, the governing NDC as well as the Osu Mantshe also laid wreaths.
A member of the planning committee, Koku Anyidoho said it has been two years since the passing of the late president but the lessons should not be lost on Ghanaians.
