The Ghana Marine Police has hinted it would begin confiscating Jet Skis and speed boats along the Ada estuary, ahead of this year’s Asafotufiam festival.
Every August, the festival attracts thousands of people from all walks of life including Diasporans who have interest in learning more about Ghana’s rich culture.
Recently, one of Ghana’s finest hiplife gurus, Castro, also known in private life as Theophilus Tagoe, and Janet Bandu, a female companion were reported to have drowned while Jet Skiing along the Ada estuary.
A 30-minute ride on a Jet Ski, according to Joy News’ Benjamin Tetteh, costs about GH₵150 and a rider skis several kilometers at top speed on the lake leading to the estuary.
The Ada District Assembly, Benjamin Tetteh reported, met with the police and owners of resort facilities in the area Thursday to map out strategies towards an incident free festive occasion.
The police, he added, have put all security measures in place to avert future occurrences.
Chairman of the Ada Tourism Stakeholders Association, Festus Kokayang also told Joy News’ Benjamin Tetteh that the Castro and Janet Bandu’s supposed drowning could have been prevented if there were attendants to limit the speed of the Jet Ski.
He observed the tides were high at the time and so if the speed of the jet was limited, they would not have drowned as alleged.
Leader of the Marine Search Team, ASP Foster Kotoku faulted the quality of life jackets used at the resorts by clients.
He advocated for the use of a complete life jacket such as the type A, which has been designed to float and protect a person’s vital body parts – the neck, eyes and the nostrils.
