Pressure on the Kpone landfill site is set to reduce as newly commissioned Nsumia Waste Disposal facility begins operations.
The new site, which has been engineered to contain refuse for the next two years, is to replace the closed Pantang landfill site.
Located within the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality, off the Accra-Nsawam highway in the Ga West Municipality, the facility is will serve as an alternative solid waste landfill site for residents particularly those in western Accra.
Currently the Kpone landfill site is the only site receiving garbage from Accra. It is has the capacity to receive about 2,500 tonnes of waste each day with an unbearable stench emanating from the dump site as a result of the mass of huge garbage.

Speaking in an interview, Peter Kwei Dagadu, General Manager of Waste Landfills Company Limited, operators of the site said, the strategic location of the facility would enable it to cater for the refuse collected in Accra and nearby Municipalities.
“At the moment all refuse trucks go to Kpone and this is putting a lot of pressure on the site so this new one would ease the pressure and also serve as an alternative site for dumping refuse.”
He said the site which had a size volume of about 680,000 cubic metres could receive a minimum of 80 refuse trucks per day.
The site has been licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency to operate as a Solid Waste Disposal site, Mr. Dagadu stated.
The facility has the capacity to handle up to 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily and that will substantially relieve the pressure on waste contractors that travel all the way to Kpone to dump.
Mr. Dagadu however, advised the public to be responsible and subscribe to waste collection services to guarantee that their waste ends up at the right location for efficient disposal.
